I notice after washing the winter crap off of my blazer that there seems to be little spots of rust on the clearcoat from the salt and what not. You can rub them off with your fingernail. So I guess what I want to know is if I can just take some sort of buffer and buff the spots out. Any helpis greatthanks.

 

Yes they can be buffed out. This happened to my dads 2002 F250. The harsh winter here in michigan made the spots tough to get off with a buffer. We ended up rubbing the entire truck down by hand. It was lots of work, but the truck looked so much better. I believe we used Turtle Wax rubbing compound.Meguiars Number 9 would also do the trick though.

 

I believe what your experiencing is called rail dust. It happens when the train that transported your vehicle to the dealership or from the plants wheels grind on the track. It causes tiny iron deposits to manifest in your paint and can spring up form time to time. I believe you can use a clay bar type removal method or you may just want to have the dealer remove it. They are supposed to remove it before the car goes on the lot anyway.

 

well i guess that could be possible if it was ever on a train. most vehicles i see are on trucks. but what is this clay bar method you are speeking of? and how would you get the dealer to do it? i might just go ahead with the buffer

 

Your vehicle most likely was on a train just after it was built, the delivered by truck to its destination dealership. Clay Magic is one removal system you can use. However, I would not buff it out. If it is rail dust, it will cause damage to your paint. You may not see it right away, but over time your clear will crack and peel away. I would take it to the dealership and tell them to have a look and if it is rail dust, have them fix it. If not, then use the Clay Magic, it will be much easier on your paint.

Any auto parts store should have it. There is Clay Magic and I just saw on a visit to the auto parts store today a new one: Turtle Wax ICE Clay. Haven't tried it yet. Keep your eyes peeled though because weather permitting, I will buy and try it this weekend and post about it.

 

Clay bar, by clay magic (My Fav) or Migueirs system. Both sold at Autozone and Pep Boys.

 

ok so i saw an add for a clay bar in motor trend and it explained how it removed the contaminates pretty cool....so hopefully it will remove the rusty spots.
