Its possible that the cable broke or has become disconnected from the front differential. Easiest way to check is to crawl under the front diff and on the passenger side you will see a cable running in to a tube with 3 bolts holding the tube to the diff. Remove the tube and slide it out a bit (you might leak a tiny bit of gear lube so keep a rag handy). You should see the cable attached to a hook with a little clip about the thickness of a paper clip holding it on. Make sure that is clipped in, if not then thats your issue. If its clipped then disconnect it and have someone move the other end in and out to make sure it moves like it should. If it doesnt you got a borked cable. If it does move then its inside the diff that you got an issue.

Hope that points ya in the right direction.

ok, so the cable was a little gunky, i lubed it up, its working a lot better. its stil hard to pull out the full 1/2" to 3/4", but, i found that my vacuum line from the vacuum switch to the actuator has trans fluid in it, possible bad vacuum switch? thank for the help. very helpful, im much obliged

Before you put it all back together with a new vacuum switch, pull out the fill plug on the back of the transfer case. It is possible that you have a leaking rear main seal on the transmission filling the transfer case up with trans fluid.
