With the air bags, there are still.leaf springs too, correct? If so, perhaps the leaf springs need to be replaced so that the air bags don't have to do so much?

Is it a factory air ride suspension, or an aftermarket add-on air shocks? You may have to do a RPO readout using your VIN to determine what was the original equipment.

If it's a factory air ride suspension, Christine is probably right that sagging leaf springs are causing the air levelling system to work harder giving a stiffer ride. It is also possible that the load level switch is broken or jammed, causing the air system to over-inflate the air shocks. I believe it's an arm that connects from the center of the axle to the body above the axle. Maybe check to see if the air system is functioning correctly, and shuts off when a certain height is achieved?

Where did you look for information? Do you have a repair manual?

I have a 1999 service manual in which I could see what I find about this system.

For now here is a page that has an exploded parts diagram of the stock air ride suspension dated from 1998. Perhaps it could help in at least identifying what you have.

Maybe if you could post a couple of pictures of your rear suspension, somebody here could tell you if it's from the factory or not. If it's an aftermarket add-on system, there might be a Shrader valve (tire-type valve) somewhere to adjust the air pressure.
