Default bearing question

is there a definitive way to test the front passenger axle bearing without taking everything apart

if your talking hub, jack it up off the ground, grab it at 12 and 6 oclock. rock it back and forth. look underneath for axle to move up and down. Not ball joints, axle. If axle moves up and down, hub is bad

no im talking axle bearing i have a lot of in and out play on the passenger cv axle and when i make a hard right i get 1 loud "pop" there is a very small leak (not even enough to top off between oil changes) if i move the cv in and out by hand i can see a single drop of gear oil drip out
basically i need to know if i can get away with replacing just the seal and axle because i dont have anything to pull or replace the bearing with and my local auto stores dont rent anything to pull a axle bearing

The dripping axle seal isn't going to stop, no matter what the label on the bottle promises. Since the C V shaft has to come out to replace the seal, test it by rotating it in your hands while bending the joint full flex. You should be able to feel it if it's causing the popping noise.

It would be helpful to post your SUV year, 4WD or 2WD, 4 door or 2 door, stock or modified, no. of miles and so on. Getting an accurate answer for your problem depends on providing good info.
If you don't want to provide that info each post, just put it in the signature so it will appear every time you post. It also helps on some issues to have where you are: winter salt, hot desert summers, extreme cold, also can affect the answer. You don't have to give a street or city. You can just say Upstate NY, Arizona , or New Jersey shore.
