Default Do I need a tranny jack to hold T-Case?

Well, the gasket between the transfer case and transmission seems to be giving out because I went to change my t-case fluid and a huge load came out of the fill hole. I haven't noticed any of the other problems yet (fluid in the vents, not changing vent positions) so I count myself as lucky.

Anyway, I was wondering if the transfer case is so heavy that it would require a tranny jack. Is it possible to do the job using jackstands with a board or something? Is it worthgetting the new pickup part they made to address this problem. I was thinking that smearing the gasket with RTV on both sidesmight hold off the problem longer than just installing it alone, too. Anybody else tried this?

I'm sure someone out there has done this like a million times because it seems pretty common (Thanks GM! [:@]) lol.

Yeah, I called the dealership and they said that both the seal (they called it the input seal) and corresponding gasket should be changed. I can use a pump to get out the remaining fluid before I pull it off, so hopefully whatever is leftwon't be too much of a problem.

Anyone else know if the t-case it light enough for 1 person to handle?

I have had no problems with them in the past... Just pull the drain plug on the t-case and you shouldn't have anything else to worry about.

The transfer case weighs about 100 lbs (+/- a few), so if you are doing this alone, a transmission jack is almost a must. If you have a hand from someone, you can do the work without one, possibly.

Edit -- I should add that the dealership said that this was most likely the seal between the tranny and tcase. They told me to replace that as well as the gasket.
