Honestly your best bet is to just swap the entire front diff. You can find them cheap and swap them in inly a couple hours as opposed to trying to swap internals.

Thanks this gear is the one that the shift collar pulls over to couple the output shaft and right front half shaft. I am hoping from what I remember this is easier than the whole diff

If it is just the front axle engagement that is causing problems, then you can pull the extension tube and inspect the engagement mechanism. If driven with the drive coupler slipping, you may have to replace the coupler and the mating gear as the wear will prevent proper engagement. THIS THREAD in the Tech Article (DIY) section has details concerning the front axle engagement mechanism inside the axle.

Pulling the extension tube is easier than pulling the entire diff, but you still need to remove the half shaft from that side before removing the extension tube which can be a pain.

Thanks for the info!!!. I do have a question on this 1996 chevy blazer the right half shaft is a bolt on inner is it possible to remove bolts and pull back the half shaft enough to get the extension tube out. I saw reference to this somewhere I just can't remember. Anything to save 5 steps.
Thanks again!
