Put the parking brake on and the tranny in neutral. Then check the u-joints on your rear drive shaft.

Could just be drivetrain slop. Some vehicles do it more than others. My K5 does it all the time when going into reverse. So long as you are patient and let it clink before hitting the gas pedal, it should not hurt anything.

Ya I wouldn't worry to much about it, both my 01, and 02 jimmy's do the same when put in reverse, and sometimes in drive, very well could just be your u-joints.

I had this same clunk problem, and it was the rear u-joint on the driveshaft. It was almost gone, needle bearings non existent, two of the shafts worn down to half original diameter. This was the OEM part, changed at 95K km but worn out much earlier. Funny how the dealer couldn't diagnose the problem during annual maintenance, and just said usual things about "driveline play." I guess lubing and checking U joints is not done, although it's not difficult.
I changed the U joint myself. It was a bugger getting it off the driveshaft. I tried a balljoint/U joint press, but no go. Took the driveshaft to the dealer, guy in service and he said I should be able to press it out with vise and sockets. I said I tried the balljoint press, which does the same thing. Then he put it on the shop press and got it off. Afterwards, he agreed the vise wouldn't have worked. The shop press with 20 tons did it. Didn't try melting the plastic either, don't want to be torching and banging on my driveshaft.
