Default Loose Steering

The steering on my 2000 Blazer is rather loose. I've have the ball joints, tie rods, center link, etc. all replaced still loose. Someone told me there's a adjustment screw or nut on the steering box which is suppose to tighten the gears or something inside the box. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this process or does this adjustment screw even exist?

My steering wheel has quite a bit of play also. My mech. Says it's the steering box. Says about $160 labour to get at it.....then tighten. But.............says it would be better, however, it's just guesswork. So couldn't tell me how much better it would get. I asked him, if they happened to make the best possible adjustment, would it be as good as new? Answer to that is, no. So.........better to get a rebuilt for maybe around $350, to put in....at the same time that $160 is being spent to just access it. Maybe even customize it to a 3 turn, lock to lock instead of 3 & 1/2? Either way it should be more reliable than the faulty OEM box.

I have this problem myself and I think it's a combination of wear at every point in the steering system. I suspected the steering box as well on my '95 however there are rebuild kits which include a few small bearings which could be the main problem. Some day I'll get around to pulling mine and rebuilding it. If this thread is still open 6 months from now hopefully I'll have an answer.
But the idler arm is the weak point in the steering system IMO. I'm guessing when that goes out, more wear is placed on the steering box.

Just like several other people, mine has the sloppy steering as well. I was quoted at about $550 for a remanufactured steering box and installtion. Replacing the steering box will fix it, but only until the new box wears out again. I had my idler and pitman arms checked out when I was trying to confirm the box was bad, and the mechanic said they were still tight and good. Isolating the box as the issue.

check for a worn rag unit in the steering shaft - under the plastic cover at steering box [ or worm gear is the old term for steering box ]

^ rag. Any oil around thr box will migrate tothe rag and decompose it.

There is a complete writeup with pics on Pirate4x4 site. Doesn't seem very hard aside from getting everything set back correctly.
