Default Rear End Question

The rear end in my '96 Blazer is going out. Screams while I'm driving down the road. I know what gear ratio I need, being 3.73. What I was wondering is if it will be a simple swap to replace my current drum brake, posi read end with one from a ZR2 that has disc brakes and is posi as well. Or will I have to make a few more changes?

Thanks in advance!

this might give you an idea about the zr2 rear end. I would say go with the disk brakes if you are going to do an axle swap.

if your going to do a disc swap in the back I beleive you need to change the master cylinders/booster as the brake balance is not the same from disc to drum and disc to disc. Don't quote me, but I've read this in many places before. You may be able to get away with just an adjustable proportioning valve, though

I think you're actually pretty dead on. I was able to get a hold of my main mechanic and he informed me that the brakes lines would have to be swapped, the master cylinder, etc. etc. Ton of things to do. So, I'm thinking to just save money at this point, I'm just going to swap it for stock and worry about changing it all to the ZR2 rear end down the road. I don't need the extra stopping power at the moment anyways. Will when I swap the motor out for a 305 carb, though, and get rid of all this computer crap. lol

is your rear end bad or is it your differential? Because your option with a new diff you could get...

or

that would be much better than the zr2 g80 lsd, and then the axle wouldn't stick out like a zr2

Why would you replace the 4.3 with a 305? chances are that the 4.3 makes more power than that 305 will stock, The 4.3 make smore power than even some of the older 350s

I prefer the 305. Would get a 350, but I don't think it'll fit in the engine compartment. I don't like all the computer controlled stuff, as well. Plus, my hubby and I can work on carb motors. I also plan to bore and stroke it as well, with larger pistons. Oh, it'll have more bhp than stock. lol Maybe not more than my 4.3, but more than stock. And I sure as hell am not gonna get rid of the 4.3.

I believe it's just the differential. But the whole rear end is original, so I'm gonna replace it anyways. Instead of just rebuilding the dif with better gears.

350's are the most common swap into a blazer, actually. They fit without any trouble what-so ever
