Default Winters coming! what should I do?

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum but not to GM! I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy.. Now my question for you guys and gals is.. My four wheel drive solenoid broke (surprise surprise) and it broke in two wheel drive so the front wheels are useless. Now I live in the midwest and I'm sure you guys know how useless these things can be when limited to rear wheel drive. So Instead of spending all that money on a new soleoid that will break again can I jut pull it off and shift it into four wheel drive by hand and leave it that way? I'm assuming theres no constant electrical load to keep it in 4fd so I should be able to just do it by hand right? Has anyone done this? My mother currently drives this so I really wanted to do it for her saftey so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
