Default 1994 backspacing

I have a 94 S10 blazer 4x4 with factory aluminum rims. Is the stock backspacing 6"? And if i want aftermarket wheels to stick out further do I look for a lower or a higher # of backspacing? I have read a few posts on this and one person says 5" would stick out more and someone else says 5" would bring the tires in further. So who is right?

It all depends on what you are talking about, 4x4 or 4x2. All 4x4 rims are 6" back spacing. By decreasing the backspacing, you will be pushing the wheels out further.

Thanks, I'm hoping to get the front out 1" and the back out 1 3/4" but I don't want different backspace on the front and rear wheels so I'll try to get them even with spacers and go from there.
