Brian has given you some good technical advice, but rooster might have aquick (temporary) fix for you. I had a starter with worn out brushes and used a baseball bat to tap the starter motor for a couple of weeks before I got around to putting on a rebuilt starter.
Tapping the starter motor just helps the worn brushes to make contact and gets the current flowing.
