97 hesitation
Hey guys new to the forum, seems to be some good stuff here. My 97 has 150,000 miles on it now, have owned her since around 50,000 and it has been great but lately she stumbles when i step on it too hard, usually 1/2 throttle or more, just seems to have no snap and lacks the power it used to have. I know I need a fuel pressure regulator due to hard winter starting on a warm engine but could this also be the cause of my power bog????? I replace my fuel filter every 6 months and have done it in the last 60 days but I noticed the fuel was almost black when i dumped it out of my old filter, putting in a new one made no difference in performance. Cleaned K&N filter, no difference. Plugs, wires, cap, & rotor replaced @ 125,000 miles.I guess at this point I'm thinking fuel pump or plugged cat????? I currently have no trouble codes, Looking for Ideas, thanks in advance
I would have to recomment that you remove the MAF sensor and give it a good cleaning. The MAF can get quite dirty, especially when a K&N filter is used, affecting its ability to properly sense the incoming air volume. If the resistors in the sensor get dirty, the dirt acts as an insulator, giving false readings.
You will need to disassemble the MAF sensor by removing the 4 allen head bolts. Buy a bottle of MAF specific cleaner and have some q-tips handy. First try to blast the crud off of the little resistors. They should be a grayish/silver color when clean. If you cannot get them clean by spraying, then you'll have to spray some of the cleaning solution into the cap and VERY CAREFULLY use a q-tip to clean the resistors. It is VERY easy to damage the sensor and replacements are $250+. You don't want to trash it. Gently clean the resistors. Once cleaned, reassemble and reinstall the sensor.
See how that goes...

Peeps,
I'm having the same issue in my '96, though it's not that noticeable. Since I was planning to upgrade to a throttle body spacer anyway, I will be sure to do this also when I do the swap. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the advice, cleaned mine tonite and reinstalled the stock airbox / filter and it seems to be much , much better from my 2 mile or so test drive. I'll know for sure Sunday as I am going on a 500 mile or so trip to pick up a snowmobile for my brother in law with it. What is the sensor that pops in just after the MAF?? Temp???? I cleaned that too when i had it apart although neither of them appeared dirty. Don't think I'll be putting the K&N kit back in, didn't notice much except for more intake noise anyway, thanks again
The K&N intake is definitely worth the maintenance. Just clean the MAF about 200 or so miles after you re-oil the filter. The problem is that some K&N filters come over-oiled and coat the MAF sensor. By the time that it exibits drivability concerns, the filter has released pretty much all of the excess oil it will release until you clean it again.
When I had a K&N intake, I used my shop vac to suck out all of the excess oil after I had cleaned and reoiled the filter.

I hope I'm not piggy backing this thread! But I seem to be having the same issue. But my hesitation rellay shows up when the engin is still cold (even when almost 90 outdise) Could this be tha same for me? I think alot of things are fould from it sitting alot. It's a 2000 with just 62,000 on it. Most of the miles were racked up in the first 4 years.3000 were in the 3 years. So could this be my issue? (agin sorry for butting in on this thread)
Thanks
Thanks
