Backfire through the throttle body while cranking is a classic symptom of a faulty distributor cap & rotor. Use AC Delco only.

Because it suddenly died I would lean toward fuel pump first. Listen for the fuel pump to cycle for about 2 seconds when you turn the key to run but not to start. If you hear it run check the pressure or even if you cant here it. If your outside with noise and the bell chime sounding sometimes its difficult to hear. Backfire could also be a ruptured fuel pressure regulator leaking fuel into areas in the wrong place at the wrong time. If your not getting spark you may not be getting a signal to fire the injectors either. That could be Crank sensor. When they start to fail Ive seen them stop working when the car is hot or outside temp is hot and work flawlessly when cold. Thats if it didn't just completely fail. Start with trouble shooting the fuel system then if its ok move on to the ignition. If it continues to backfire when your cranking, stop. Find the problem. Something will get damaged. Good Luck.

Sudden fail is sudden broke. Timing problem is backfire, if you can, like Chuck said inspect all parts related to your cap, rotor and distributor.
Something is busted up there or down at the bottom of the dizzy.

Yup, induction occurs, (backfire through the intake) if the spark plug fires when the intake valve is open. Crossfire in the distributor cap is usually the cause.
