A/C bearings locked up

A/C bearings locked up
Hi. I have a 95 Blazer. The bearings in my A/C unit had been making noises and I knew it would lock up eventually....which it did this morning. Fortunately I was home when it did. Just seeking some advice, as I'm not an experienced mechanic, but can handle some basic repairs. How difficult will it be to pull the old bearings and replace them? I know you need a special tool which I am sure i can get from Autozone. Just the bearings is 20 something, and the whole clutch assembly is about 100...big difference in price. Just wondering if it would be easier to replace the whole clutch assembly or if the bearings would be fairly simple. Also, just wondering. I do not actually use the A/C, so I was wondering if it's possible to just bypass the A/C with a different size belt? I have to get her running today, so any quick advice or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

unplug the wire harness on top of the compressor, zip tie wire out of the way, and your a/c'less

Okay...but the bearings are locked up. The AC pulley will not turn. My Blazer has one belt that runs everything. What I meant is, can I get a different sized belt and not have it going around the AC, but everything else?

Hey, thanks everyone for the replies. This forum has been a big help. Later.

Yes, you can do that. It will not hurt anything, until you can get it fixed.

Thank you Frog....quick question if anyone happens to know. I'm in the process of replacing the AC pump. I have all three bolts loosened but can not get the bolts all the way out to remove it from the car because of the pulley. Does this mean I have to remove the pulley to remove the bolts? If not, then what the hell is the trick/secret to getting the bolts all the way out. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you replace the entire compressor, do yourself a favor and use this one: http://www.acsource.com/sandenclonef...ompressor.aspx The original Harrison HT6 is a "split case" design. Over time they leak where the two halves are connected. The Sanden does not use a split case and it's quieter, cheaper and lasts longer than the Harrison.
If you want to bypass the compressor, here is a link to the part: http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-6941...ymmeid=4027802 With this part, you can use your original belt.
