yea thats what i was confused about, how to put the backing plate in. But after pulling the e-brake assembly it all came together, i cant wait to see how yours works out. No more bushings is a great idea.

 

What is the best way to remove the old hinges?

I was looking some more today and noticed that since I have to use spacers everywhere... I can just cut the ears off the old hinges and drill/tap the backing plates that are already there. All I'll need are some washers and nuts on the inside to make sure things are secure. I might be drilling through 1 or 2 of the spot welds but I'll still have 2 holding as well as 2 12mm bolts which is all they had in the first place.
This would work out even better to help me keep everything straight.

Thoughts???

if u gonna go that route, in my opinion a good idea and creative just drill your holes thru the old hinge with the ears cut off and tap it to the size bolts your gonna use and go with it, theres no real chance of getting nuts behind the body its hard enough getting the plate in there but a single nut would be impossible from my experiance. the body is thicker where the hinge mounts then even i thought its a double panel of 18gauge steel there plus your gonna facter in the 1/4 inch from the old hinge still mounted that should be plenty of support, i would do it that way in fact when i do that to my other truck that is how im gonna end up doin it.

 

The only problem I see with it is that I'm not comfortable having very little threads through there. I'm still going to attempt to get a washer and nut up in there. At least if I don't succeed it's still pretty much done.

Unfortunately upon further inspection (a.k.a remembering) I cannot use this method on the hardest of hard places to reach. The upper hinge to body. Can't win 'em all I suppose. At least it cuts my hinge removal to 25% though.
I also decided standard fasteners are getting used. I have a 7/16-14 tap laying around and why buy another if I don't have to.
