Default Facing Brake Rotors

Hey,
Anyone know anything special about facing disc rotors? I will have to find out the material of the rotor, which is probably Cast Iron and choose a lathe cutting tool and speed accordingly. I would plan on taking off as little as I can on both sides of the rotor until the whole face is flat.

Am I missing anything?

most shops have brake lathes and some parts stores also. but with todays cheap rotors most places recommend that you just buy new ones,
that is the route i would go. rotors are very inexpensive these days

No, you've got the process down right. Every rotor has a minimum thickness that has to be maintained after surfacing. The down side is that after you've turned the rotors they'll be thinner and more susceptable to warping (read they're not going to last all that long) plus you'll have longer pedal travel (minimal) due to the additional caliper piston movement required to reach the rotor. If they're badly warped, I don't think I'd even bother turning them. At $42 a corner you may be better off with new rotors.

If you do decide to turn them yourself, be aware there is a minimum safe thickness. If to much meat is taken off they can shatter under braking.

Do`t know the thickness right off the top of my head.

pedal throw will not increase, if that were the case as brake pads wore the pedal would travel further and further, the caliper just stays filled with brake fluid and the level in the master cylinder goes down as more fluid stays in the caliper

Hey guys, thanks for the helpful input. I've had them faced once before and now this horrible warping appeared after a wild ride through a snowstorm to get some fresh ski tracks. I bet the cold snow hitting the very hot rotors (I was up to 60mph in 1.5ft of snow, heh) caused this.

Since they've already been done once, I think I'll get new ones, since as you say, they're relatively cheap and these have been faced once before. I don't need a rotor to 'shatter' on me, now. Lol

Thanks guys!
