Default key hard to turn into accessory

hello all. its been a while since ive been on here. but now that its warmed up i ran back into a problem that i have had the whole time. my key does not want to turn back into the accessory position. it seems like i have to turn it forward about 30 times before it decides to go into the slot. like it has to be just right in order for it to work. i spent about 5 minutes trying to get this to work at the drive in theater.

so is there a way to just lube it up? like is it safe to just shoot some WD-40 down the key hole and see if it works? i dont want to ruin any electronics or anything so some advice here would be useful.

thanks guys.

Do NOT shoot WD-40 into the ignition switch!!! Use the search feature on the site to give you proper remedies to this common issue!

As I have not had this specific issue, I can only relate fixes to earlier GM trucks that had the same problem (70's thru early 90's) sorry! step66

I had a similar problem in my 01 Saturn SC2, and in the long run I had top replace my ignition cylinder.
