I know that many sources show greasing the back of the shims but I have never done this, I have always cleaned them up and installed then dry.

Got everything back together and.... it's still making the f'ing noise. I'm really starting to think it's the pads. It was fine the first two or three stops, no noise, but after braking the fourth time the noise came back. So frustrating

Look up a brake pad break in procedure and try that.

Okay so I've driven it off and on for two weeks now, and it hasn't made the noise in that time. (I have a different non brake noise I'm dealing with now, but I'll make a separate thread). I ordered new rear pads and rotors, but now I'm not sure if I should just return them to rockauto. The thirty day return window is almost up. I'm wondering if the pads just needed to be broken in or something. Another possibility, the noise was coming from the front and I didn't realize it. Because a couple weeks ago I did pads/rotors on the front because they were pretty worn. I don't like the uncertainty, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for all the help.
