Default starting (huh?)

My 97 blazer 4dr 4wd is having a tough time starting. The key will turn, but it won't catch most of the time, I have to push the gas to get it to get going. Once i have it going for 15 seconds, she will idle on her own just fine and is reliable to drive for at least 30 minutes (the longest I have had to drive so far). The only fishy thing is that the volts show 14 or more, but the lights inside are flickering only a bit, like it is getting a normal amount of pwer, then too much and back to normal. Like a power surging quickly.
Now- sometimes, after a short start, she won't have any power at all, like no battery connection at all. The battery is new, the alternator is new, the terminals are clean. then to get to where can try to start it again i have to turn the ignition back off, then try it again. The key does not need to be removed.
What is the deal?

Thanks in advance.

did you install the alternator yourself? even if you didn't i would go back through and double check and make sure everything is hooked up properly. do you have any type of security light flashing when you try to start it?

I did put the alternator in myself and will double check it. The only thing that I changed is that I bypassed the ac compressor and shortened the belt. When the battery does not work, it is not as though the battery has been disconnected. the radio and time do not have to be reset like when the battery is disconnected. The volts were down a little bit on an earlier trip, still about 13. Recently the volts are up above 14 maybe to almost 15ish. The voltmeter seems to move a little bit when running, which seems pretty normal.

Sorry, and no security light either. The check engine light and battery light come on when it won't start, but once started they go away.

you say you shortened the belt? is this a homemade or aftermarket. i'd check the tension of the belt too. if it doesn't have proper tension it could be messing with your alternator. the volt gauge shouldn't move alot. unless your battery has been severly drained.
