Default custom door speakers first gen

I'm trying to put door speakers in my 1989 2door. I've done tons of research trying to find the perfect place. I've pretty much came to the decision that the best place that will allow for minimum cutting is in the vent slot on the very bottom front of the door panel. I was looking to put 6.5s but I have some 5x7s that I got for the kick panel that look like they would fit beautifully there. My question is,and my assumption, that the slot is there to keep the window from shattering when shutting the door. However through my research I've seen plenty of custom jobs where that vent was done away with entirely. So my question is did they just move it and I not see it or is it just for looks and I'm reading to much into it?

You're reading way too much into it. Think of the hundreds of other models of vehicles on the road that don't have any ventilation at all in the door panels. As far as the speaker size you use, as long as it fits just use whatever tickles your fancy.

That's what I thought but it's always nice to hear it from someone that probably knows more than me. I'm doing a lot of different things this go around that I thought was different and difficult until I found this site doing research. I'm also putting a Sony double din touch screen in that I thought was impossible to do for a while
