BoB have you ever competed? Since the very first show i ever attended i was hooked! Not only the systems but the friendships that came with going to shows. I have made so many life long friends who are all great people all from SPL competitions. Simple as that.
And to answer the question of why have a system this loud, is as simple as why you try to win in any sport. Also there are some bragging rights to. haha
At the point i am at its not so much being able to enjoy the music but bein able to show local people something they have never and probably would never have thought possible. Seeing peoples jaws drop and watching womens hair stand straight up, and peoples hearts damn near come out of their chests when you giver the meat. Its not as meaningless as some people think.
I do many other things besides just the SPL competitions, like stunting on my bike, and im a huge outdoors man as well. Is any hobby really practical? Not really. [sm=youreright.gif]

just curious.... whats the point of having a system capable of playing music at ~160db for 30 seconds? Its not like you can actually enjoy the music. Dont get me wrong, I think its great that you are pursuing a competition that you enjoy. Wouldnt you prefer something a little more practical though?

As for the enjoying the music comment, I know a guy, Steve from Team USAudio, is doing 160+ in his XTerra and its his daily driver. The clarity he has in that truck is amazing when he plays music

Ive competed for sound quality. In fact, on june 7th, I will be attending the IASCA judges training to become a certified judge. No doubt the actual competition is great and like you mentioned, friendships are inevitable. I just dont understand why someone would want to listen to music at ~160db. If you actually enjoy driving around listening to music that loud, you have to be one extremely deaf person lol. Im not trying to bring you down, just trying to understand why a person would want such a system besides the competition portion.
And yes, I can make a very storn g arguement that a SQ system is extremely practical. Everyone who rides in the vehicle can enjoy it. SQ is enjoyed at a normal listening volume level. You can appreciate the music as the recording artist intended.

Welcome to dB Drag Racing. [sm=shades.gif]
And BoB congrats on going for your judges certificate. Thats sweet. I know you arnt bashing here but everyone has their own likes and dislikes right. haha Just for argument sake i will bring up the fact that SQ although seems practical to you, does your average joe enjoy the music anymore then with a average system? PRobably not, seeing as Sq in the first place is VERY biased. The reason i say this is cause unlike SPL where its jusged by a sensor, Sq is 100% in the hands of the judge and his likes/ dislikes. Many people dont knwo what to listen for to understand a actual Sq system. Me included i know a bit on SQ but by all means not any kind of guru. I have listened to a Iasca winning car before (Dave Oackly, and James Chevrette's cars) and honestly they sounded good, but your question was it worth the money and more importantly the time they had into their builds? Was it practical to build these cars to win competitions? To them yes it was, to other no it wasnt. Its all a point of view.
PS i have said it before, its not like these 160 dB "daily" systems are actually listened to at these high of levels on a regular basis. It is after all a competiton vehicle that is the main reason they reach and are designed to be so loud. You think anyone could honestly even handle 160 dB of music for the 30 seconds? haha If so i want to meet the man. [sm=hiya.gif]

You guys are X-treme and it looks cool, nice workmanshipbut as dleon said, it dont take all that much to destroy your hearing, look at The Who guiarist, anyways my question is I just wanna replace all my stock speakers with better quality ones, (cause the door OEM speakers are blown)but that fit without mods, now do I have to remove the whole door panel to access those or do the grills pop off? how about the dash and rears? do they pop off or am gonna be spending a weekend tearing up my inner panels? reason being is that the driver side plastic pop in's broke so I put down a light bead of silicone and applied overnight pressure which really fixed the problem and i would hate tearing my work up and re-doing it half ***, Is it possible to get some kind of upgrade using external components or any suggestions at alll? thanks

Door panels have to come right off its all one piece. The dash in blazers are empty they are for 4x6 in the sonoma, and int he case of the Bose systems they will have a tweet in the dash. The rear 6x9s you have to pretty much tear down the entire rear of the truck to get to them.
Most component sets will fit in the doors do mods required, you have about 2.6" roughly. And f you drill out the rivits on the spacers you can build them out enough to clear 3" of depth.
