What do people really use CB's for these days anyway? I've always been curious. Are they primarily so everyone can communicate while on a trail?

CB's are great to have, especially here in colorado. If you are in the mountains and something happens you can get on chan 9 and get in touch with law enfocement for help. All the forest service rangers here and police monitor it. Not to mention easy comms between trucks and weather monitoring.

It depends on whether you are going after performance or looks. If you want performance, the best place to mount your antenna is on the roof - centered front to rear and side to side. This position will offer optimal rx/tx performance. The next best position would be on the rear quarter panel utilizing a ball mount. You could also mount it on the rear tire carrier or the bumper, but you will sacrifice performance. On the rear tire carrier your rx/tx will become directional towards the front of the vehicle. With the antenna mounted on the bumper the body of the vehicle will obstruct and skew your radiation pattern so it will offer the least performance. Obtaining an acceptable SWR can also become a problem because the signal gets reflected back into the antenna off the body. Ideally, you want the antenna mounted as high as possible and obstruction free. If you just want looks you can mount it anywhere.
