Dirt in the fuel is a killer

Dirt in the fuel is a killer
OK, I know that 99% of you guys are fuel injected, but dirt in the fuel has the same effect in carbs as in injectors.
For the last month I've had problems getting my engine started. I've had to crank it over longer and play with the gas pedal.
Today I got fed up and pulled aprt my carb. If you look at these pictures, you'll be amazed that it even ran.
Anyway, I cleaned out the dirt and replaced the float, needle and seat and the gaskets. I'll put it back on tomorrow and I bet it'll run 100% better.

How much of that junk was down in the bowl?
Man I remember the first RQJ that I ever pulled apart. Playing with metering rods in those things was fun... Nothing like tuning a Holley though. Holley's are just more predictable. When I got the chance to switch to a Holley 650 DP on my Chevelle, I jumped at it! $100 for the carb and Edlebrock Torquer II intake!

That, my friend, is why I decided to go gasless, carburetorless, and spark-plugless 8 years ago. That mess can drive you crazy at times. I've had the same problem down in an old Q-jet I had. Good running carb though when she's working right, huh?
