Default Cam retard

How do you set cam retard timing? I have seen it mentioned 1000 times but never how to check or set it.

You'll need a scan tool capable of displaying this parameter to check as well as set the cam retard. To alter the displayed value, you will need to loosen the distributor hold down bolt that is at the base of the distributor where it goes through the lower intake manifold. Just loosen this bolt and the distributor will then be able to be moved slightly side to side. This motion should allow for a total of 15 degrees of cam retard adjustment. If you cannot get cam retard to zero, then your distributor may be installed a tooth off where it meshes with the drive gear on the back of the cam shaft.

Will a snap on scanner work?

Please help.

My luck is not good today. Camshaft Retard started at -11. Distributor drive gear was worn bad. Installed new distributor and modified bracket to adjust. It now changes from 0 to 1. Truck has 187000 miles and bogs down bad through the intake. The balancer has slipped. With the lower timing mark lined up the rotor does not point at the 6 so I marked where it was pointing and installed the new dist the same way. No faults at this time and holds 60 psi fuel pressure. I believe it has the original timing chain.

Your cam retard setting looks to be in spec, but if the balancer ring has shifted then mechanical timing gets quite difficult.

If we assume that the distributor is timed correctly, I would inspect the wire order on the cap. The passenger side of the cap is 2/4/6/C with C being the coil wire while the driver side of the cap is 3/1/5. It is possible that you have the #1 & #3 spark plug wire swapped.

Wires are correct. What is the exhaust piece upstream of the cat and can it be clogged. the cat has been replaced with a straight pipe. I have owned this truck for about 7 years and it just died on the road 1 day.

Please provide your vehicle information (year, make, model, and any other pertinent information that might help with the issue at hand).

As far as the exhaust system goes, probably should try to take a picture of the area you are questioning and post the picture. Even the newest of the s-series Blazer family of vehicles is still 20 years old at this point. Many things can change over that length of time.

The first photo is the pipe replacing the 2nd cat. The 2nd photo is the upstream cat. and the third photo is the honeycomb inside the cat as seen through a bore scope. I gutted the cat like a fish and now it roars like a lion.
