i am purchasing a 1987 k5, am only payin 500 for it, which is a great deal on a four wheel drive vehicle...the problem is the wheels on turn to the right a little.....and im not much on steering and suspension...i know motors, i know transmissions, even body work, but.......not steering. any ideas? i was told it could be the gear box, or the linkage, but im not sure. now, it is a major project vehicle, has a lot of rust, but i love it.... any help?

fuel gage hasn't worked since 2003 (the quote I got for replacement back then was $350 so I just watch my miles)
entire A/C system (had a dealer do it as cheap as local shop and now I've got full warranty as long as I own vehicle)

That's just what I can remember. Mine has been a money pit. Don't know what I would have done if it weren't for friends that are good with cars. This website has helped me try some things I wouldn't have attempted on my own in the past. For comparison, put 80k on a Ford Ranger (which had 100k when purchased) and never had to spend on anything other than routine maintenance.

 

Bought it back in early May (so 3 months now) with 130XXX on the odometer, now it's at almost 133,000 and already:

Tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) ($100)
Trans rebuilt ($1175)
Trans rebuild 2nd time ($1015)
Front door speakers ($30)
Refilled the A/C ($35 for a canister with stop leak from Autozone)

Needs:
probably wheel bearings for both sides
misfire in cylinder 3
rest of the speakers need to be replaced
rear mounted spare tire carrier was missing ($50, buying one in 2 weeks)
shocks
quarter sized rust repair just in front of the drivers rear wheel.

But I love driving this thing every day so much more than I ever liked driving my 04 Neon...

 

I only had my 87 blazer for about a week, but i have already had to adjust the tie-rod, it needs upper, lower ball joints, i need a whole new suspension system all the way around, a new body mold for the rear to get rid of the rust, the seats bolted back down, a new rear window motor-regulator, the center-bolt is broken on the driver side leaf spring, it needs a radio, the transmission needs to be serviced,i need to get a door key, the center console needs to be bolted back down.when i first got it, i had 230 degrees in steering to the right, and 20 to the right, and the rest was gone in play. i guees a new power steering box would be great too.....but for only 500 bucks, it isnt a bad deal....it runs and drives so to me it is well worth it....

 

my 96 got for 2000 and only had to replace a fuel pump, then a week later the engine blew with 156,000...not i bought a 98 for 1600 with new brakes,fuelpump and tires but with no luxury anything but its 4x4 and on the way home NO BS the drive-nuetral-park indicator light stopped working,swaybar endlink broke, and then i popped the hood and broke the hood cable..so we shall see how this one goes..i love them..drive nice and get you through the deepest snow..but i hate to say it, the most common vehicle i see broke down or on the towtruck around here is blazers..makes me nervous..mine had paint coming off the bottom of the doors so i sanded all the trim and painted it black. now its black and red just like my cougar hahaha..but the blazer is the wifes and i store the coug in the winters..

Rear bearings - $60(still haven't gotten a chance to do this job, though)

Even though I spent enough on both the vehicle and repairs to equal KBB's price, I would say it was worth it!
