Default Questions about towing a blazer

I found a front end damaged zr2 about 25 miles away, was looking to pick it up but it needs to be towed. I've towed an 87 Supra on a car dolly with my 98 4 door 4x4 blazer, would it be out of the question to tow the zr2 with a car dolly and if I can tow it, do I have to disconnect the driveshaft since it's a 4x4? It would approximately 30 miles it would need to be towed.

even if it wouldn't hurt the trans why take the chance - unhook the driveshaft - better safe than sorry

If the car dolly has brakes then I'd say no problem. If it doesn't have brakes you can still make the trip, but you'll need to be quite careful with your braking distances. You'll be maxing out your trailering weight for the Blazer and your braking distances will be significantly longer. If road conditions are icy or slippery then I'd recommend against towing something that heavy with the Blazer just because the trailer can push your truck around on slippery roads.

Like Odat said, I'd personally make sure to disconnect and suspend the drive shaft just to be extra safe. My understanding is that the Blazers with the NP236 transfer case can be towed safely without disconnecting the drive shaft, but I'd still take the precaution myself. It's just 4 bolts and wraping the u-joint bearings so they don't fall off, then a cinch-strap to suspend and secure the drive shaft from the frame. Pretty simple.

This me and my brother almost lost control after hitting an icy patch about a mile from home after driving about 2 hours towing his 08 Silverado with my dads 96 f150 that dolly barely made it

Thanks for all the input! I'll definitely keep the road conditions in mind for sure, it's supposed to clear up a little soon it sounds like, or at least I hope haha.

If the truck runs, just idle it in neutral and put the front wheels on the dolly.

As El_Beautor mentioned, if it has the NP236 transfer case, shift the case into neutral and dolly the front wheels. If it has the NP233 transfer case, do as ohsofly mentioned, or remove the rear driveshaft and dolly the front wheels.
