i just joined this site for advice on this very issue. i just picked up a spare tire carrier (with a new tire!) on craigslist. i was planning on welding up some steel plates, from the bumper mounts, through the bumper, on the outside of the truck, and just anchoring it into the body. using the bumper to support the weight of the spare. we will see how it works, and i cant wait to post my work...

i went to a junk yard and pulled a rook rack off a t-boned h2 hummer. the way it was mounted on the hummer was side ways cuz their so wide. so i measured side to side and measure the back of my blazer to the front and it fits perfectly. ive got it held up there using u-bolts and the factory rack. i went with the roof choice cuz i like have visibility out my rear window, i have dual pipes so no tires up under the truck, and the rack only cost me $20 cuz their computer rang it up as something like a stock set(the rails and cross boards) got a brang new 31 held down with a ratchet strap up there now. i welded up a bar to the front to mount my lights. IMO, it looks badass

My 94 with the spare on the back is a PITA to see what's behind me. Actually on my (2 dr) 84 Jimmy with the full size (235 75R15) tire in the cargo area wasn't too bad exceot when you have a bunch of stuff to haul around. I took my 7 drawer rollaway toolbox on some out of town jobs and just took the drawers out and put the box forward of the tire and the drawers inside it with the tools still in them. It worked. The tire does take up a bunch of space though. I'll take it over the rear mounted carrier though. I would think about mounting it on the top but don't have enough Wheaties every day to heft it up and down of I had a flat Though it does look pretty badass .

I just picked up a rear tire mount today for $20 with a spare rim that matches my four, and have a 96 Jimmy 4 door I am wanting to mount it on. If anyone has installed one before please post what you had to do. Frabricating & welding won't be an issue since my father is a retired welder.
