Would it be legal if I...
Turned roof-mounted off-road only lamps into clearance markers when they're off while I'm driving on the street? If I were to come up with a way to place an AMBER/YELLOW LED into the lamps/housing of the lights, would they be considered clearance markers and therefore be OK for on-road use? Or would the po-po be up my a$$ about it? So When I turn on my regular headlights, the lamps would act as yellow markers. And I don't mean to say that the LED will be enough to project light anywhere, just enough light for them to glow yellow (just like clearance markers).
This being in the horrible state of Massachusetts... If that matters.

If the output of the amber light is comparable to your other marker lamps, I suppose it would be OK. You will need to check the laws in your state as they can vary. If you are calling them clearance lamps, be sure it is in compliance. I believe you need 1 on each side & 3 in the center for clearance lamps.
Go speeding about 450 mph and ask when the cop pulls you over... JOKING....
Next time you see a copper in your area sitting pull over and ask him, most guys in my area are very receptive to questions, and if they don't know for 100%, they will get back to you as soon as they know

"...and every motor truck, trailer and commercial motor vehicle used solely as such, having a carrying capacity of three tons or over, in addition, an amber light attached to the extreme left of the front of such vehicle, so attached and adjusted as to indicate the extreme left lateral extension of the vehicle or load, which shall in all cases aforesaid be visible not less than two hundred feet in the direction toward which the vehicle is proceeding or facing; provided, that an automobile need display no light when parked within the limits of a way in a space in which unlighted parking is permitted by the rules or regulations of the board or officer having control of such way."
But that doesn't sound like that's all there is to it. I remember reading something about having markers basically on all 4 points of the vehicle if it's capable of XXX-lb load. But I can't find that stuff anywhere!
