Cash for Clunkers
I'm not going to get into teh USA and UK thing with tax and people, thats a different topic but the 8MPG is to do with the engine tuning, the UK petrol is a different octain (sp) rating so the UK engines can ran at lower revs to get the same power, less throttle, more MPG

I'll agree that it would make the fuel more expensive but 80% tax is a bit much. Avg USA gallon is what $2.60? Avg UK gallon (and I'll make it the same size as a US gallon) £3.92. Even if you count $1=£1 thats a 50% increase. Convert it, $6.60. But we are getting off topic again.
I think it's a great idea, cash for clunkers, if your thinking of trading in anyway. Will it make me trade in? Yeah it crossed my mind but I need to save some $$ before I spend it. I think it might of been better off to offer $4500 worth of payments. That could be 10 months of not having to pay for your car and with 0% like most dealers are offering I think it might of been a better move. But don't distroy the cars, some of them are getting 18MPG and some people are still running around in cars doing 10MPG, why not offer to swop them cars out. The gov have already paid for the clunkers so no one needs to make $$ would get a lot more 8-15MPG cars off the road. Even if it's 1MPG difference, your saving 5000, 10000, 20000, how ever many cars have been sold, miles per gallon.

wolfen, your high opinion of your Blazer has no bearing on this thread, period. If you want to continue this discussion, please create a thread on the topic of how much better your 89 Blazer is than the new GMT360 line and I will gladly debate the topic with you. Its called staying on topic...
And just to settle one other thing about your mileage. What is being used for the CARS program is not your observed mileage, but the EPA estimates that were on the original window sticker. No Blazer ever came with a 17/24 rating. The 1989 Blazer is rated at 15-city, 20-highway, and 17-combined by the EPA (SOURCE).
In the future, when debating on a particular topic, please research said topic.
BTW, I am Kyle...

the only research I need to do is on research my own vehicles. NONE of my vehicles are klunkers, they all get over 18 mpg combineed. I'm not going to rip you and everybody else by grabbing a 4500 credit just cause Obama says I can, that just wouldn't be right.
My S-10 Blazer gets combimed city and highway milage higher than what they say it did new, yea thats my fault, I'm dam proud of it too, that just tells me I know a little more about my vehicles than other people do , ( imagine that).

I did not say it was a gas mileage problem, I just said they had the 18MPG problem. A lot of cars 10 years ago in the UK did not get 30+MPG, where as most normal family cars will get 30+MPG and with diesels being on the same par or better then petrols for acceleration and top speed, but getting between 40 and 60MPG, the british gov want people to buy diesels or hybrids.
Which tells me there is ANOTHER main reason...
So I ask again, what did cars not have 10 years ago that some have now and more and more are thus equipped as the months go by?
I know what you were saying. I am pointing out the fact that even though their cars got more than 18mpg, 'they' still had to find a reason to get this program going. Which tells me gas mileage isn't the main purpose of this program.

Oh sorry misunderstood what you was getting at but I see what you mean now. Good question. Lower Co2 maybe, trying to get in line for the 2012 emmision standed. Greener cars, more cars now days can be recycled or the gov's just want an excuse to raise taxes and **** us all off!
