I have never owned a Radar Detector before and would like to get one, but dont understand what all the features are when im shopping around, any sugestions? Im looking for something around the $50 range and I dont care if its used or new.

 

get a cobra, i have a whistler it works alright

 

slow down! lol i have had a bunch of em, Cobra and Whistler are good btw... but if the cop is shooting laser at you... you might as well have nothing...

they tend to enjoy giving tickets to people that have radar detectors... dont ask how i know

With RDs, you get what you pay for. I have a V1 for sale and currently running a Redline because of it's stealthiness from the Spectre. I live in VA and they have Spectres here. Good luck with the $50.00 price range.

A radar detector buys you time. If you are the only one on the road or in very light traffic and the cop is using instant on there is no hiding. Once he hits you with the radar gun it is too late. Now most times you will get a reading from a car ahead of you which allows you time to slow down. If a cop is running with the radar on you will most likely pick it up with enough time. The very best detectors will have very long range to buy you time. I have a cobra but would love either a Bell or Passport or even a Valentine One. You are talking over $300.00 for those. You can get a decent Cobra for around $80 searching the internet. Do not get caught up in all the Bands that Cobra offers. All you need is K, KA, X band and Laser. Most police are either K or KA or Laser. VA & DC are the only two states that radar detector use is illlegal that I was aware of. You also said Minnosota which I was not aware of. You will also pick false alerts around shopping centers. In your normal commuting range you get used to the areas that trigger false alerts. But KA band is never to be ignored. ussually the false alerts are on X-Band.

 

Thanks for your input guys! so im going to look for a cobra that has K, KA ,X Band and laser feature. And just for refrence, RD's are illegal here in new york, but only if their used in comercial vehicles ( 10,000 LBS or more). personel cars are trucks are fine. weird huh?!

 

i paid only 20 bucks for mine at a pawn shop haha mine works great up to half mile away on a straight road, other than that hills are its weak point
