I use 4Lo in my jeep when i'm rock crawling but mudding, you need tire spin to clean the tires. It depends on what kind of wheeling your doing. In the snow i'd use 4hi. As for pulling some one out, some times you need to jerk , just a little not full speed , and use a tow strap, not chains. The staps have some give to them and thats what really pulls the guy out, the recoil of the strap. Thats just from my experiance.
I would have to agree with pretty much everything goat said. I would give a slight jerk but I wouldn’t agree with getting a running start especially if your using chains. You will start bending your tow hooks and like someone else said, possibly pulling your frame rail out of alignment...not a good idea.
I agree not to break things by getting a running start on a chain. If you have a ****** cord that extends then I say go for it. They are the best at getting unstuck because of the elastic force they can give...until they snap and smack all the paint off the back of your truck.
it is best to pull in 1st gear and 4lo. 1st gear is 3.06 X 2.72 (t-case 4lo gear) X your alxe ratio. Reverse is 2.somthing gear ratio.
To yank someone out you start out slow. Strap taugth and see if you can pull them out. If that dont work, back up a couple of feet and give it gas. If that dont work, back up a little further and give it gas. I highly dont recommend a full out run the length of hte strap. No doubt something is going to break.

Some automatic trans vehicles allow you to manually start off in 2nd gear which keeps the torque applied to the wheels down so that you can get going in low traction conditions without slipping.

I think switching back into 2wd you need to have the truck rolling a l;ittle bit, atleast thats how the colorado's 4x4 works, its electric thats why im comparing it.
My 05 Blazer switches to/from 4lo when stopped... but I can only engage 4lo when the clutch is pressed, very nice feature, especially if someone else happens to be driving, and taps the 4x4 button, and misses, lol.
I still prefer the stick shift 4x4... any of the 2nd gens come with it?
