Right I'm trying to get the steering link off of the pitman arm but it won't come off all the way.

Try going to autozone and renting one of there loaner tools. A tie rod puller should work for you.

i know this thread is old but for future reference, I had to unbolt the steering box from the frame, leaving one in but loose, then really hammer a ball joint fork in between the center link and pitman arm.
