Play around with the shifter (doing 1/16th to 1/8th movements) and see if it will drop into reverse. If it does and its not on the R marker, then you have a bad shifter cable. If there is NO R at all, then you have an internal issue with your trany. Its odd for R to go all the way out and all the forward gears to act fine (no slipping or anything).

So if NO R at all, you are looking at hitting the trany shop for TESTING. They can tell you if its your VALVE Body or if there is another part in your trany that is toast. I would have to lay my odds on the Valve Body obstruction if all the forward gears work fine with no SLIPPING/DELAY.

Or go the other route and just replace the trany if so mechanically inclined.

I actually tested that theory yesterday. I tried all ranges with the x-fer case, and moved it from park thru R to N really slow in hopes of something hitting and nothing. I would also stop here and there along the way to see if maybe it would help, no luck. The idea of something getting stuck in the reverse valve has come to my mind a couple times. I mean it worked and didn't work in a matter of 30 seconds. I was backing up (with it working), put it in drive pulled up a bit, then back in R and it wouldn't engage. Is the reverse valve easy to get to in this tranny? Does anyone have an exploded view of the tranny that I could look at? If it's something serious I might work out a deal with my uncle and just drive the tranny into the ground since drive works completely fine. I am fairly mechanically inclined and I have pulled trannies a couple times so I could do it in this truck, I might float around for a rebuilt tranny.

I appreciate y'alls help!
Thanks
Chris

Saw a trany that might work for you on ebay for $350 ..........

www.car-parts.com (junk yard multi search) showed several from as low at $185 to $1200.

As for the reverse issue, could be in the valve body or the piston. Normally reverse goes its signs that low range is next to go. (checked with some trany shops). So this is for sure in need of some attention. Your call on which you do.

Good luck

Yea I have heard that as well about the 4lo going out after reverse. I am just gonna take it to a tranny shop and let them hook it up and see if they can diagnose it that way. I just don't have time and it's way too f-ing cold without a garage to work in.

I think your looking at a rebuild.
The only thing to plug up a tranny filter is tranny parts. No hte rust in the dipstick tube wont do it. No doubt the stuff plugging your filter was the reverse cliutch packs.

Check the How-To section for info on removing and installing the tranny.

By the way, you have a 4L60E tranny.

ok,, my only suggetion would be is tearing the tranny apart,, a lot of times in auto trany is a brooken sprag,, i think its like a $15 to $25 part in the back of the trany,, i have had it happen and everytime it does different things,,, i wouldnt believe in clutches due to the fact you use reverse way less then drive,, to me if you take out reverse clutches the rest of the trans wouldnt work either

Yea, its hard to take out a reverse clutch pack. Maybe some of that rust did manage to stick a valve in the valve body. Rear sprag is a good possibility too.

Thanks all for the responces. The truck went into the tranny shop today the guy is gonna pull it and take a look inside. I am probably going to have then rebuild it depending on what they say. I just didn't have the time to mess with it my self. I'll let y'all know what they say.
