I have a 99 Blazer and the rails that hold the spare tire is rusting and chipping at certain corners. I was thinking of getting it re-powder coated. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get the rack re-powder coasted? Or if anyone has a better idea on how to cover these areas it would be greatly appreciated.

well im a fan of rubberized undercoating, and an even bigger fan of roll on bed liner...

BUT

to powder coat, i would jump on craigslist... there is a guy about 20 minutes from me that will single stage powder coat 4 rims for $100... i'm sure something like a spare tire carrier (prepped) would run maybe $25 bucks or so... then $4 later you can clear coat it with a rattle can if you so choose...

hit up craigslist and check out your area.

 

I just used POR-15 on my (NEW) gas tank to keep it from rusting, according to their website you can paint this stuff right over rust and it will stop it forever. I brushed it on my tank and it came out so smooth and glossy, i could see my reflection in it. I plan on doing the same to my spare tire cover and roof rack in the spring. The paint also covers alot of area, i only bought a pint and did two heavy coats on my tank and i still had 95% of the can left! I would highly recomed this stuff to anyone! the only bad part is that is really expensive and you have to prep the metal really good. I paid $35 for a pint at my local autobody parts store but you could probally find it online for a cheaper price.

 

Thought POR was not supposed to be subjected to UV = sunlight.

Maybe they changed their formula since the last time I used it.

Other then that it is great, tough stuff.

Just checked their site. Guess you will be ok if you top coat any exposed areas.

 

sorry, forgot to mention that if you are using it on surfaces that are going to be exposed to sunlight then you need "Blackcote" to go over the POR-15 to protect from UV rays. Thanks Rogue, that totally slipped my mind!

I used rustoleum hammered spray paint and got some pretty good results

 

I think it was 50 bucks a tire here for two tone powder coat... price could be region dependent as well

I had mine powdercoated about three years ago and it was in the $100.00 range for the rack and its brackets. It has held up very well and still looks new even with the abuse of children, keys and hockey sticks! Painting it yourself is an inexpensive alternative, but don't skip the prep work. One bit of advice if going the powder coat route- remember to get your pins and bolt heads done and then tap in the pins with a rubber mallett, or you will end up painting rusty pin and bolt heads with a Q-tip like this guy I know... LOL
